“Oedipus the King” after Sophocles’ tragedy in Greece once again: September, 22 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens.
The performance by Rimas Tuminas is an international project between the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia and the National Theatre of Greece. The world opening night of the show was hold in Epidaurus (Greece). The Moscow first night is scheduled to November, 13 — the day of 95th anniversary of the Vakhtangov Theatre establishment.
Participants of the show: Liudmila Maksakova, Viktor Dobronravov, Evgeniy Kniazev, Artur Ivanov, Evgeniy Kosyrev, Maksim Sevrinovskiy, Eldar Tramov, Valeriy Ushakov, Ekaterina Simonova, Pavel Yudin and others. The Chorus parts are performed by the actors of the National Theatre of Greece.
“This project is very important. It merges together two great theatre traditions: the unique experience of the Greek theatre in ancient tragedy and the psychological school of Russian theatre, — sais the artistic director of the Vakhtangov Theatre Rimas Tuminas. — Today all theatres seem to merge into one world theatre. I don’t feel any boundaries. It is a harmonious universe. All people love, hate and suffer in the same way regardless their origin. Is there anything like nationality of pain? I’m tiered of comparisons. There is a world spirit of theatre. And there are no separate art schools— there is only one school, the school of talent. That’s what I trust, that comes from the Lord.
I believe that Sophocles is the most mighty playwright of the ancient times. A director could stage these plays continuously during his life-time again and again. It’s like a beautiful immortal melody that can not ever be out of date. This melody is familiar to me somehow and I have a right to sing it”.
