In spring 1935 the Vakhtangists showed the first night of the play by Pogodin “The Aristocrats” depicting the process of people “reforging” in the labor camp of Belomorstroy. Nowadays the falsity of Pogodin’s view on this topic is evident, however the play was written sincerely, seemed scenic, living and many theatres grabbed it. In the Realistic Theatre, N. Okhlopkov produced “The Aristocrats” earlier, using the Japanese theatre techniques, going out into spectators seating, “flower road”, etc. Zakhava, who rehearsed “The Aristocrats” in the Vakhtangov Theatre set himself up other issues. For him , it was important to transfer the labor of reforging, its burden. V. Ryndin who mounted the performance strained after the word picture of the grey “stony” skies of Karelia. The stage director strived for severity, realistic simplicity and strength which, strictly speaking, were not present in Pogodin’s play.
