In 1966 Ruben Simonov produced “Red Cavalry” based on the stories by I. babel and poems by V. Mayakovsky. Having heard about the performance, former cavalrymen sent an angry letter to the theatre, Babel’s book was called slanderous. But the performance left the old disputes aside. It was different. All his elegance, romanticism, poetry Simonov put in this elevated, touching and joyful performance. The tone to everything was given by the famous “Budenny’s March”. The characters were simple-minded, vigorous and irreconcilable like kids. Theatrical charm and whirlwind rhythm of the performance were so contagious that the final scene always went on to an ovation.
